project overview
All Wednesday is a feature-length documentary dedicated to the supporters of Sheffield Wednesday FC, released in 2018 in partnership with the club. Conceived and produced as a personal passion project and homage to the team I support, the film explores what it means to follow a football club across generations, from childhood memories and lifelong traditions to the highs, lows and defining moments that shape a supporter’s relationship with their team. Structured across four chapters, the documentary brings together interviews with Wednesday fans of different ages and backgrounds, intercutting personal testimony with archive material to create a collective portrait of the fanbase and its shared experience.
The film progresses from the origins of fandom and early matchday memories, through the adversity of relegations, poor ownership and years of decline, to the euphoria of promotion campaigns, cup victories and memorable derby successes. The final chapter takes a more intimate and emotional approach, exploring how football can provide a sense of community, identity and family during the most difficult periods of people’s lives. Three deeply personal stories — the loss of a brother and best friend, the sudden death of a father at a match, and a young boy undergoing life-saving heart surgery — demonstrate how the bonds formed through supporting Wednesday extend far beyond the football itself. Together, these stories form the emotional core of the film, highlighting the unique relationship between a football club, its supporters and the communities built around it.
The completed film was subsequently given two cinema screenings in Sheffield, including a special showing at the Showroom Cinema marking the end of Sheffield Wednesday’s 150th anniversary year, followed by a second screening at Sheffield University Students’ Union. Following the screenings, All Wednesday was released on DVD through the Sheffield Wednesday club shop, with all 3,000 copies selling out. Around £17,000 in profits from the sales was donated in full to four local charities, extending the project’s impact beyond the film itself. The documentary was later released on Sheffield Wednesday’s official YouTube channel, where it attracted more than 50,000 views before ultimately being removed when the licences for archive footage expired. You can however watch the full film here.
